Some Reasons Why the File Dialog Box Does Not Open

Note for All:
The "Open Dialog" box may be hidden behind other windows that you have open.

Firefox

• Version 3.6.21:
  Tools>Options>General
  In the "Downloads" section-check "Show the Downloads window when downloading a file" and select "Always ask me where to save files"

  Tools>Options>Applications
  For Content Type "Compressed(zipped) Folder (application/zip)"-select "Always ask" (i.e. asks to Open or Save) or "Save File" (i.e. can only Save file)

  Tools>Options>Content>click Manage button

  Checking the box has the effect that Firefox does not ask what to do with this file type from then on but simply performs the default operation selected by the user which means either saving or opening the file automatically with the selected application.’

MS Windows/Internet Explorer

• For Windows XP/IE6:
  
  My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types
  Scroll down to the extension type of the file type you are trying to download (for example jpg, txt)
  Click the Advanced button...Check "Confirm open after download"...

  IE>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Browsing section>check the "download" box

• IE 8:
  
  Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Browsing section:
  select "Notify when downloads are complete"
  
  
• Windows Explorer:
  
  Suggested settings for viewing file list in Windows Explorer:
  
  Tools>Folder Options>View tab>under the Files and Folders section:
  "Hidden Files and Folders" -select "Show hidden files, folders, or drives"
  uncheck :Hide extensions for known files types"
  After changes are made, click the "Apply to Folders" button.

  Modify the download preference on the computer

  Click Start, and then click My Computer.
  On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  
  1. Click the File Types tab.
  2. In the Registered file types list, click the file type for which you want to modify the download preference, and then click Advanced.
  3. Check the Confirm open after download check box, and then click OK/
  4. Click Close.

  • Save this file to disk
